Department of Electricaland Electronics Engineering of Jain College of Engineering Belagavi, organized Industrial tour on 18/04/2024 to the Varahi Underground Power House located in Hosangadi, Kundapura Taluka, Udapi District,Karnataka, in association with The Institution of Engineers India students’ chapter (Electrical).

This plant has been instrumental in the production of clean and renewable energy in the state of Karnataka. It has a total installed capacity of 460 MW, making it one of the largest hydroelectric power plants in the region. The primary objective of this industrial visit is to provide students with an opportunity to gain firsthand experience of the working of a hydroelectric power plant. This visit offered students a unique insight into the process of generating electricity from the force of water. Moreover, it gave them a chance to understand the various aspects of power generation and distribution, including the technology involved, the safety protocols followed and the environmental impact of hydroelectric power generation.

Mr. Vijayakumar, Senior Staff explained and showed various units of power house. Mrs. M. P. Radhika, Assistant Executive Engineer guided through the entire process of power generation, from the intake of water from the reservoir to the distribution of electricity to the grid. Students learnt the unit commitment and demand side management in live, operation, maintenance and control of power generation mechanism. Our students had the opportunity to interact with the technical staff of the power plant and gain valuable insights into the working of the industry. Such visits will bridge the gap between the industry and academics.

The visit was organized by the HOD of EEE Department Dr. Venkatratnam Chitturi and it was coordinated by Prof. Nandaraja Shadlageri and Prof. Priyanka Kothavale. There were 29 students along with 2 faculties during the visit.
